NEM Malaysia: Everything You Need To Know

Nowadays, many people have changed their lifestyle to cope with the changing demands of the world. This includes our diet, lifestyle and also the way we use our electricity.

Solar energy is becoming more popular among Malaysians due to its many benefits. One of the benefits of solar panels is Net Energy Metering in Malaysia.

What is Net Energy Metering? Read this article to find out more.

What Is Net Energy Metering (NEM)?

NEM in Malaysia is a mechanism that allows a customer who is using a solar system for their use to save money.

This is because the excess energy that their solar panel system generates will provide a credit against the electricity that is consumed in the household.

The additional energy will be exported back to the grid.

The Concept of NEM Malaysia

The concept of NEM in Malaysia as mentioned earlier is that the energy which will be generated by the solar system will be consumed first.

The excess energy will then be exported to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) credit.

NEM in Malaysia is not only available to those who use it in their homes but is also applicable for all commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors as long as they are the customers of TNB.

In this section, we will give you an example of how much you could save if you have a solar system in your house.

For this example, we took a semi-detached house with an average electricity bill of RM300 per month.

The results were staggering. This is for the house under the proposed installed capacity of 4.25kWp.

Under these terms, from RM300, you would only have to pay RM77 after Net Energy Metering. That will bring your monthly savings to RM223.

This is for only one month, if you have the system all year round, you would easily exceed RM2000 in savings.

How To Apply?

You can apply for Net Energy Metering at the Sustainable Energy Development Authority of Malaysia’s website.

All you have to do is make an account to register.

In addition, SEDA Malaysia’s website informs that existing NEM consumers have been able to update their project profile and system capacity ever since 10th April 2019.
