Different Types of Solar Panels in Malaysia

Having solar panels in your homes is an effective way to reduce the consumption of energy, thus lessen the bill that you’ll receive.

Not to mention, it has less impact on the environment. Needless to say, the solar panel is one wonder that saves all – your pocket and the earth.

Get to know more of this device by understanding the types of each solar panel. Keep on reading to find out more on the different types of solar panels in Malaysia

Types of Solar Panels in Malaysia

There are three types of solar panels in Malaysia that you can choose from. Each has its own advantages according to your needs. Below are the different types of solar panels.

1.Monocrystalline Solar Panels (Mono-SI)

Monocrystalline panels’ power output is high. It also occupies less space and lasts the longest out of the other panels. This results in it being the most expensive type of solar panel.

They are also robust and are less likely to be affected by high temperatures compared to other types of solar panels.

2.Polycrystalline Solar Panels (Poly-SI)

The second type of the solar panel in Malaysia is polycrystalline. Compared to the monocrystalline solar panel, it functions at a lower efficiency, takes up more space and has a shorter lifespan.

However, one of its most significant advantages is the low cost. This is suitable if you are looking to save money when investing in a solar panel in Malaysia.

3.Thin-Film Solar Panels

There is a lot of difference between a thin-film solar panel and the two that were mentioned before.

One of the biggest differences is that thin-film solar panels are made up of a variety of materials. It is also more flexible, lightweight and portable.

However, it takes up a lot of space, making it unsuitable for some places to have this panel.

What Are They Made Of?

1.Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Both of these solar panels are made up of the same material. They have cells made of silicon wafers. The wafers are assembled in a specific shape to form these solar panels.

While they are both made of silicon, the composition of the silicon is different for both monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels.

Monocrystalline is cut from a single, pure crystal of silicon which is different from polycrystalline.

2.Thin-Film Solar Panels

As mentioned before, thin-film solar panels are made from several different materials. The most common type of panel is made from cadmium telluride (CdTe).

Other than that, amorphous silicon and Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS) are also some other materials that are used to produce thin-film solar panels.

They are formed differently but serve the same function as a thin-film panel.

What Does It Look Like?

1.Monocrystalline Solar Panel

You can recognise a monocrystalline solar panel as it usually has black cells. They are black because of how light interacts with its silicon material.

However, their back sheets and frames do have a variety of different colours. Usually, the back sheet of the panel is black, silver or white while the metal frames black or silver.

2.Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Polycrystalline solar panels usually have a blue colour due to the light reflecting off its silicon fragments. It is different from monocrystalline as their composition is different.

They do, however, share similar colours for the back sheets and frames. The frames for this particular panel are usually silver while the back sheets are silver or white.

3.Thin-Film Solar Panels

The look of thin-film solar panels is very different from the other two mentioned earlier. It is very thin and low profile. Why?

Well, it’s because their cells are around 350 times thinner than the wafers that are used in monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels.

But while the cells are thin, an entire panel can be as thick as other solar panels if it has a thick frame. The colour also depends based on the material that they are made out of.
